Differing Backgrounds

Challenge: Sport participants from differing backgrounds can have vastly different understanding of violence and gender

Solution: Prior to implementing a GBV curriculum with girls, it is critical to get a baseline understanding of girls’ perspectives and experiences. Hold preliminary group discussions. Ask girls questions about their opinions, survey their knowledge. Be sensitive about the fact that girls might have experienced GBV and should never be forced to publicly expose their situations. Adapt conversations based on girls’ literacy and comfort. If girls hold differing notions of their rights and violence, because of social or religious difference, work to create an environment where everyone is open to speak and be heard. Encourage girls to explore their difference and serve as resources for one another.
