Programme Profile: Boxgirls

Boxgirls International links innovative projects around the world using boxing as a catalyst for social change. The skills girls learn in the ring, improve their strength and resilience, allow them to better negotiate the urban environment and bring them further in their schooling, family and career. Boxgirls currently has programmes operating in Germany, Kenya and South Africa.

Examples: Boxing, tae kwon do, self-defence, karate, capoeira, kickboxing, aikido, wrestling

Developing the skills to physically defend yourself against an attacker is an empowering experience for a girl. Martial arts teach girls self-discipline and respect. Girls who are able to fight back, reduce their vulnerability to being attacked. Beyond building physical strength and effective technique, teaching combat sports and martial arts can instil an emotional confidence in girls.
